Pap Talk

This post is for women–I have a question for you, but first, my experience: I recently had my annual exam. You know the one where you put your feet in stirrups and say ah? Yeah, that one. Anyway, my doc is chatting away with me, and pretty quickly the conversation lags. I don’t say anything and she asks if I’m all right. I say, “Yeah, fine. It’s just weird to be talking while you’re down there doing what you’re doing.”

She laughed and said she usually talks to patients to distract them from what she’s doing.

Um. Yeah, no. No amount of talk is going to distract me from what you’re doing. And talking while you’re doing what you’re doing is, like I said, really weird to me.

What about you? Do you prefer to talk while your doc is taking a pap smear? Or do you prefer to suffer in silence?

INTO THE RIFT, the prequel to KISS OF THE VAMPIRE, will be released in electronic version in June.

OMFG! Is this too gorgeous, or what?! I love it!

Demon Finn Evnissyen and fey princess Keira O’Brien go undercover to expose the person behind the rift device and put an end to whatever plans he or she may have. They are reluctant allies then lovers as the danger of the situation heightens the closer they get to the bad guy. If they survive, they must overcome their distrust and differences and find out if a fairy princess and a demon can have a happily-ever-after.

(As soon as the talented folks in the marketing department give me a real blurb for this book, I’ll be sure to post it.)

HEART OF THE DEMON is due out in early 2013.

Forever Romance is having a party over on Twitter. Since I don’t have a significant other at the moment, I thought of some maybe unconventional things you could do today, if you’re like me.

1) Watch a horror movie instead! My favorites are Dracula, Dead & Loving It; Dracula 2000; Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein; Comedy of Terror; Underworld. (And, okay, technically I know that Dracula D&LI, A&C Meet Frankenstein, and Comedy of Terror aren’t horror movies per se, but they have monsters and/or horror film actors, so I’m counting them.)

2) Send the guys out and have a girls’ night in. Grill some steaks, add baked potatoes and salad and maybe some wine, put in a good movie and enjoy your friends’ company. Some movie suggestions: French Kiss, The Italian Job, First Wives Club, Fried Green Tomatoes, Sense & Sensibility.

3) Be your own Valentine! When I need some relaxation time, I like to head up the mountain.

Looking out over the expanse of the valley, listening to the wind in the trees, it’s all very peaceful. (Even with the remaining fire damage from almost 10 years ago, it’s still so beautiful!)

So answer me this:

1) What are some of your favorite movies?
2) What do you do to relax?

One lucky commenter will win a copy of KISS OF THE VAMPIRE!

Valentine’s Day Bash

Today’s a busy day, and that’s the wonderful thing about the Internet! I’m doing a guest post over at RomConInc, so please stop by and say hi, and chat with me about the first time you fell in love with a vampire (be in from a book or movie).

I’m also joining Forever Romance in a Twitter party. My time slot begins at 3:30 p.m. MST, so hop on board. Just use the hash tag #4EvrLove to join in. There’ll be lots of chances to win prizes!

And at some point this afternoon/evening I’ll be sharing some excerpts from some of my Amber Heat Sherrill Quinn books over on the Amber Heat readers group. That party’s going on all day, so come on over and take part!

Treadmill Desk on the Cheap

Okay, so one of my New Year’s resolutions (like always) is to get healthy and lose weight. Anticipating this, I bought a treadmill in December. Between the time I bought it and today, I’ve been on it three times. Way to get healthy, right? *sigh* And to add to this failure, I’ve been reading that people who sit a lot die sooner than those who don’t. Oh, great. I sit on my full-time day job, and I sit on my full-time writer job. I am so screwed. But, wait! There’s such a thing as a treadmill desk. You can walk while you work. Not fast, of course, but still, some movement is better than no movement, right?

But I don’t have hundreds of dollars to spend on a treadmill desk. So being the daughter of a frugal man who was good at MacGuyvering things, I decided to make my own. On my last trip to Wally World I picked up a 4-pack of bungee cords for $3.98. (I’m only using 2 of them, so for this project I’m halving the cost.) I made a trip to Lowe’s and bought a wire 36″x12″ shelf for $7.98. Here’s what I came up with:

(Jeez Louise, I didn’t realize how dirty my laptop screen was until I took these pictures!)

This is the perfect height, and walking at about 1.2 miles per hour I can still type and read. As I looked at this set up, I realized it wouldn’t work for when I needed to edit (because final edits for Grand Central are done with print galleys). I needed a hard surface, not heavy wire with spaces. So I grabbed a wooden shelf from a bookcase I destroyed while trying to move it with most of the books still on it (yeah, call me lazy and learn from my mistake). And now I also have this:

It works great, though if I need to write I have to step to the side rails for a couple of seconds. I haven’t mastered writing and walking at the same time. Yet.

I am so out of shape that I can’t stay on the treadmill for great stretches of time, like hours in a row. (Oy, do my hips start to protest!) But today so far I’ve been doing about 20 minutes on and 10 minutes or so off, and that seems to be working.

So, for ten bucks and some change, I have a workable treadmill desk. Yay me!

Guest Author Kristen Callihan

**UPDATE 2/6/12: The winner of a copy of Kristin’s new book, FIRELIGHT, is…Alica!**

Fellow Forever Romance author Kristen Callihan is here to talk about her new release, FIRELIGHT. One lucky commenter will be the recipient of a signed copy of her awesome book! So…here’s Kristen!

Thank you, Cynthia, for having me here. I’m thrilled to be hitting the shelves alongside Kiss of the Vampire –which is most excellent, btw! 

On thing that struck me about Cynthia’s book was the uniqueness of the story. In the paranormal market, finding a unique angle is quite hard. Everything you can think of has been done. So then it becomes a matter of approaching the story from a different perspective.

When I started writing Firelight, I had double trouble in regards to freshness because I was working with not only paranormal, but the highly popular trope of the beauty and the beast story. How then could I make it different?

One huge difference I decided on right off the bat was that my heroine, Miranda, would not be some defenseless miss. In truth, she is more of a threat than the villain. Her ability to start fires with a thought is a great power. But as Stan Lee once so brilliantly said in Spider Man, with great power comes great responsibility. Miranda constantly struggles to control her ability. She doesn’t want to go around burning things down. And yet the desire to do it is there. Which begs the question. Is she really the beast in this tale?

Which brings me to Archer, my hero. He is the identifiable beast in this story. I could have made him a number of things. But I wanted to try something different. I wanted him to be something no one has ever seen before. This is always a risk. But, for me, part of the fun about writing paranormals is that your imagination is the only limit. No matter what Archer is, however, at his core he is all too human, with human heartaches and vulnerability.

It is only when Miranda and Archer come together that they become whole. Two beasts finding each other and becoming human once more. 

I had great fun trying something different. But what about you? What are your favorite monsters? And, given the chance, would you be willing to become one?

My Warriors of the Rift series has vampires, werewolves and other shapeshifters, pixies, demons…you name it. Not all of these have the spotlight, but they’re there, in the background. Waiting. Biding their time…

What kind of paranormal creature do you like to read about? Tell me about it. One lucky commenter will be chosen at random to win a copy of Kiss of the Vampire and some other neat prizes.

I Love Vampires

My love affair with vampires began as a teenager. That’s when I read Bram Stoker’s Dracula for the first time. It’s when I discovered Christopher Lee as Dracula in old Hammer Horror Films (which also starred Peter Cushing as Abraham Van Helsing. Loved the duo of Cushing & Lee in anything!). Then there was Frank Langella as Dracula, and Michael Nouri in the TV series Cliffhanger. (I think it only lasted 2 seasons, I don’t remember for certain.) Later on came Anne Rice and Laurell K. Hamilton with books about (or containing) vampire characters. And then…

Then I discovered paranormal romance. The authors who have written love stories with heroes or heroines of the undead persuasion are too many to mention them all. Some of my favorites include Sherrilyn Kenyon, Angela Knight, Christine Feehan, JR Ward, Kresley Cole, Kerrelyn Sparks, Lynsay Sands, and Nina Bangs.

I was up this morning at 4:00 a.m. Didn’t get to sleep until close to midnight, but at 4:00 I was awake. Wide awake. So I got up and started surfing the web. And discovered this gem:

Very clever!

Secret of the Wolf

I have my new cover! And it’s gorgeous–check it out:

She plays by the rules and always delivers justice, no matter the cost.
